WorkMate Evolution: Tri-material extra-protective case, for Samsung Galaxy S4

DESIGN LOGIC + GALAXY S4 DROP TEST: Cygnett’s Lead Industrial Designer, Shannon Brown, and Industrial Designer, Haydn Smith, describe the logic behind the WorkMate design project with an escalating drop test of the Galaxy S4 with the new WorkMate Evolution, from up to 3m/10 ft.

WorkMate Evolution has an integrated Polycarbonate, TPU and Silicone design to give your phone a superior level of shock absorbency. It’s constructed with this TPU chassis and impact corners for extra drop protection. It has a protective and feather-light rubberized PC shell.

We included this textured silicone inlay for anti-shock and grip properties and to create some stickiness on surfaces like dash boards. It has a deeply-embedded bezel to protect the screen. And, it has a really slim profile.

Shannon Brown, Cygnett’s Senior Industrial Designer explains the design logic, “With the WorkMate Evolution, we wanted to ramp up the functionality of the series, while maintaining the super-slim, slick form we’ve become known for in the protective category. We came up with a case that’ll protect user’s phones if they’re active or into adventure, but will still fit in really well in an urban or work environment.”

Click for more information on the WorkMate project. The complete WorkMate Series includes:

FOR THE FASHION FORWARD Form and Feel (Joan Harris or Betty Draper?)

This season, the cultural currents have guided our Galaxy S4 colour collections towards the 1960s. In Mad Men terms, the Form and Feel cover the spectrum from ‘Joan Harris’ to ‘Betty Draper’. Whether the look is boldly bejeweled or whimsically girlish, this most elegant time travel is elaborated on awards reds carpets, haute couture and high street fashion.

<img style="float: right;" src="{{media url="wysiwyg/form-jewel-brights2.jpg"}}" alt="" width="150" />

Form are high-gloss hard cases in on-trend jewel brights – Sapphire Blue, Ruby Pink, Onyx Black, Diamond White and 2013 Pantone® Color of the Year, Emerald Green.

Cygnett Trend Forecaster, Toyah Perry, explains, “These opulent jewel hues, Sapphire Blue, Ruby Pink and Emerald Green, reveal a rich baroque influence. The audacious 1960s gowns in vivid gemstone tones mirror the movement towards coloured stone jewellery – a departure from the customary frosting of diamonds. Of course, the vivacious ‘Joan Harris’ (Christina Hendricks) is the contemporary icon of this va-va-voom colour spectrum, but we’ve also seen Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain and Mila Kunis embody gemstones, not to mention voluptuous, jewel-hued silhouettes from Lanvin and Giambattista Valli.”

<img src="{{media url="wysiwyg/form-jewel-brights.JPG"}}" alt="" width="572" />

<img style="float: right;" src="{{media url="wysiwyg/feel-pastel2.jpg"}}" alt="" width="150" />

Feel have a soft rubberized-finish in a new season pastel palette – Lilac, Mint, Fairy Floss, Charcoal and Black. Both are super slim, snap on cases.

Cygnett’s style doyen, Torah, describes the pastel allure, ‘We’ve explored the pop-pastel Fairy Floss, Lilac and Mint shades in this range. They evoke a desaturated palette, delicately elaborated by Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway at the 2013 Oscars (well-accessorized with gold). Certainly, ‘Betty Draper’ (January Jones) epitomizes this 1960s infantilized elegance – the fresh-faced Hitchcockian beauty is the poster-girl for pastel. This graceful trend is influencing an array of fashion currents; from the gorgeous Lilac Jimmy Choos, Salma Hayek in figure-hugging lilac, Diane Kruger verdant in mint, and Anya Hindmarch’s confection-coloured leather bags.”

<img src="{{media url="wysiwyg/feel-pastel.JPG"}}" alt="" width="572" />

For the Form and Feel range, we’ve explored the 1960s reference palettes of the season – for the fashion forward – whether you’re channeling the allure of ‘Joan’ or ‘Betty’.

Perentie Dreaming; Ronnie Tjampitjinpa for Samsung

With the imminent release of Samsung’s new Galaxy S device, we’re very excited to be working with our grand master Indigenous ICON Artist, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, on a brand new case series.

The ICON Ronnie Tjampitjinpa cases for iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th gen. - Rainmaking and Echidna Dreaming - have been a huge success; featured in the New York Times and sold to all corners of the globe.

One of our new ICON Art Series Samsung cases will be based on Ronnie’s artwork ‘Perentie Dreaming At Walungurru'.

The Perentie is the largest Monitor Lizard or Goanna native to Australia and can grow up to 8 feet or 2.5 meters in length. They’re found in the arid deserts of Northern Territory and Western Australia in the remote North of Australia.

The Perentie are strongly associated with Aboriginal dreamtime myths in this region and we’ve been able obtain the dreaming story behind Ronnie’s artwork;

'Perentie Dreaming At Walungurru'

This painting depicts designs associated with the site of Walungurru or Kintore.

“In ancestral times, a Ngintaka (Perentie) came to this site from the west.

Two women tracked the Ngintaka to Kintore and eventually found it. One held the ngintaka while the other killed it.

When the ngintaka died, it turned to stone and became the mountain, a very prominent landmark next to the Kintore community.”

This site is associated with the Tingari Song Cycle. Since events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature no further detail was given.

Generally, the Tingari are a group of ancestral beings of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites.

The Tingari men were usually followed by Tingari women and were accompanied by novices, and their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These ancestral stories form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youths today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.

ICON takes the world by storm

We’ve been absolutely blown away by the reaction to our ICON Art Series cases from the world’s press. We’ve had some outstanding write-up from The New York Times, SlashGear, WIRED, Gizmodo, ChipChick and more. A sensational CES 2013 – with TATS CRU members, Bio, Nicer and BG183 coming over for a live demo – shone a light on ‘The Bronx’ cases. Here’s some of our favourite reviews of the last month.

New York Times - “Cygnett joined with some visionary artists for the line, called the Icon Art Series, to create some striking looks, including bright graffiti designs by Tats Cru, the Bronx-based muralists, and hypnotic birds by the Australian illustrator Nathan Jurevicius. I was partial to the bold designs by the Australian indigenous artist Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, which gave the cases a gritty, rough vibe.”

Gizmodo - “There are a lot of phone cases at CES. Imagine a warehouse full of iPhone cases and then multiply it by 10. Australian case vendor, Cygnett, is standing out by getting graffiti artists to make awesome cases before your eyes here at the show.”

SlashGear: “This week at Digital Experience (during CES 2013) we caught up with the case makers at Cygnett where they had none other than the world famous TATS CRU joining the fun for fully unique customized iPhone 5 ICON cases. The TATS CRU is a set of mural street artists that’ve been using their graffiti style since the 1980′s with explosive results.”

Wired - “The Cygnett Icon – Haven is a beautiful case. From the cover design (by artist Nathan Jurevicius) to the feel on my fingers, the Cygnett iPhone 5 cases are perfect for the person who always knows where their phone is. This is a luxury case, in the sense that it is for show and feel, not for rugged protection nor utility. It helps that the Cygnett is so slim and fits the iPhone 5 perfectly. For the majority of us who carry our phones in our pockets, there is really only the size of the phone showing. And there are many compliments once our friends do see it.”

RunAroundTech - “5 Stars. I’m always on the look out for a case that’s just “different.” A case that I wouldn’t expect to see someone else using if I say, wandered the streets of NYC for a few hours. The ICON – Rain Making case not only looks and feels good but perhaps more importantly, the case has a story behind it.”

ChipChick - “TATS CRU, the Mural Kings and internationally renowned graffiti artists, have recently teamed up with Cygnett to produce one of the best iPhone 5 cases around. Here at CES, Cygnett has not only showed off their second TATS CRU Icon Series case, but they flew the group out to customize cases right here on the CES floor!”

MobileSyrup - There are a number of reasons Cygnett has quickly become one of the top smartphone accessory manufacturers. From the high-quality materials used in its cases to the thoughtful collaborations with international artists, the company seems to be innovating in a constricting market with very tight margins and no room for error.

Companies like Speck, Insipio, Otterbox, Griffin and Spigen, among others, have watched as smaller companies like Cygnett dig into their market share and demand more attention from users and the press alike.”

The Pantone® 2013 Color of the Year – is a hue well-and-truly on the Cygnett radar.

PANTONE® 17-5641 Emerald is described as "a lively, radiant, lush green.....A colour of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony."

We’ve seen dramatic, bold and vibrant greens in haute couture on the catwalks and red carpets –Angelina Jolie and the Duchess of Cambridge made us green with envy.

ICON Artist Ronnie Tjampitjinpa featured in Paris Exhibition

As an Australian company, it’s a privilege for us to have Ronnie Tjampitjinpa – one of our country’s most important artists – in our ICON Art Series, as well as see his artwork so acclaimed on the international stage.

In October, we travelled to the opening of the National Gallery of Victoria’s (NGV) first touring exhibition, ‘Tjukurrtjanu: Origins of Western Desert Art’, at the breathtaking Musée du quai Branly, Paris. The exhibition was fascinating.

On the 40th Anniversary of Papunya Tula Artists - the ground-breaking Aboriginal Artist-owned cooperative model – it charted the art history of the Papunya movement, as well as presenting many of the ceremonial objects (like shields and pendants) that relate directly to the artwork.

Judith Ryan, Senior Curator of Indigenous Art, NGV – was kind enough to give us an interview to talk about Ronnie’s painting style;

‘Ronnie Tjampitjinpa ignored dots; most of his work is strongly graphic, linear and very bold. Many of his designs are based on the water dreaming design found on pearl shell pendants and the zigzags that encode lightning and thunder – the power to make rain.’

Seeing the relationship between Ronnie’s ‘Rain Making’ and the pearl shell pendants that form part of the water dreaming was really exciting.

<img src="{{media url="wysiwyg/rainmakingcomp.JPG"}}" alt="" width="572" />

It was inspiring to hear Judith talk about how important Papunya Tula has been to Indigenous Art and in fact Australian culture itself;

‘Papunya Tula stands alone with the strongest reputation, but has had an impact on Indigenous Art in the cities, right across Arnhem Land, the Kimberley and Tasmania… It’s without a doubt that if Papunya Tula had not been established, we’d have a very different Australia today.’

Click here to learn more about Ronnie cases and videos.

(Our full interview with Judith Ryan, will complete our Papunya Tula Stories series, to be released in the coming weeks.)

We’re thrilled to have our Icon Art Series: Ronnie Tjampitjinpa iPhone 5 and iPod touch cases, now available nationwide at exclusive Australian stockists, TELSTRA.

To celebrate the Australian case release, we’ve published Papunya Tula Stories, Part Three: History of Papunya Tula.

Ronnie Tjampitjinpa was one of the founding artists of the Papunya Tula Artists (PTA) movement. And, in 2004, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa was appointed the Chairman of Papunya Tula Artists the pioneer Aboriginal Artist-owned cooperative model.

This year, Papunya Tula Artists celebrates its 40th anniversary and its artists featured in the NGV’s first touring exhibition, ‘Tjukurrtjanu’, opening at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), Melbourne and Musée du quai Branly, Paris.

In Paris, Judith Ryan, Senior Curator Indigenous Art, NGV, reflected on PTA’s inception in 1971, a ‘big bang for Indigenous Artists throughout Australia’ when a ‘painting practice emerged and created a modern art form.’ Judith described;

‘Papunya Tula stands alone with the strongest reputation, but has had an impact on Indigenous Art in the cities, right across Arnhem Land, the Kimberley and Tasmania… It’s without a doubt that if Papunya Tula had not been established, we’d have a very different Australia today.’

Papunya Tula has promoted individual artists, but been instrumental in preserving the rich cultural heritage of its owners, whilst contributing millions of dollars towards community youth, educational, health and sport programs.

As gorgeous as the fabrics and prints coming out of fashion-houses worldwide are, they still lose their spots in comparison to Nature’s original pattern, Animal Print!

You can’t get any more original than the feminine polka dots on a leopard, or the powerfully brushed strokes on tigers (didn’t they invent pin-stripe?) and who could forget the racing colours of the cheetah?

Animal Print is never far out of sight in the fashion world and it is well loved by celebrities and every day festival-goers alike. Sure, there have been some fantastic hits and many tragic misses when applying a touch of ‘animal instinct’ to our wardrobes but, we’re calling it here at Cygnett, as a big returning trend for summer 2013.

Want to hear the best part…?

Nature’s ultimate fashion statement can now be brought to life with some modern imitations that don’t require a feline sacrifice when dressing to match your furry style icon of choice. So, you need not fear the splash of red paint when you choose Animal Print as your next fashion statement.

In the lead up to the debut of the iPhone 5, we’ve worked tirelessly to produce a range of cases that will not only suit the phone perfectly, but also the people who use them. We’ve been blown away by the sheer volume of positive press and this has encouraged our team to continue to push the envelope on design.

You can explore the media reaction on our recent press coverage page, but below is a little ‘snippet’ of the best bits.

MobileTechReview reviews iPhone 5 range: "Australian based case designer Cygnett has announced a new line of iPhone 5 cases including ICON series designed by artists, Bulldozer rugged case, SecondSkin gel case, Vector touch case, UrbanShield aluminum case and more."
GottaBeMobile reviews WorkMate iPhone 5 Case: "The WorkMate case protected the iPhone 5 from the drop, and the only markings on the phone when it emerged from the case were fingerprints from putting the iPhone 5 in the case." (21/09/2012)

Phones Reviews reviews iPhone 5 Cases: "Cygnett have some new stylish designs for the iPhone 5 that should impress.

<img style="float: left;" src="{{media url="wysiwyg/WorkMate-Group-comp.jpg"}}" alt="" width="286" height="226" />We're very excited to announce the release of a new extra-protective case for Samsung Galaxy SIII – WorkMate. WorkMate has become one of Cygnett’s most renowned series, after the huge success of the case for iPhone and Galaxy SII.

The WorkMate shock-absorbing case combines a heavy-duty polycarbonate (PC) outer and impact cushioning silicone inner.

The slimline, dual material case is pocket-friendly, offers extra protection to defend the device at work or play and provide access to all functions, ports, camera and flash apertures.

The WorkMate for Samsung Galaxy SIII is available in two colours Red/Black and Slate/Black. The colour selection was designed to complement the natural tones of the SIII – the slate recalls stony outcrops and the red evokes the rich red earth of the heart of Australia.

Our first profile includes Manuela De Laborde, Ryan Macro, Naty Lopez-Holguin, Matthew Atkinson and Ines Neto dos Santos.

Don’t forget, between 26 September - 24 October 2012, you’ll have the opportunity to vote on your favourite entries. The five artists who generate the most votes will be selected to go onto the finals.

<img src="{{media url="wysiwyg/ryan_macro.jpg"}}" alt="" width="190" height="270" />

Naty Lopez-Holguin

An artist on the rise, Naty Lopez-Holguin combines her Spanish background with her life in the UK; exploring in the works her love for different cultures. Naty works with transfer paints and paper cut-outs inspired by a trip to Hong Kong. Compositions and forms change organically reflecting the cityscape at hand.

Matthew Atkinson

Matthew’s paintings have evolved from ethereal and nostalgic hinterlands to eerily constructed and ambiguous paintings, exploring the moral and finite reality that humans have formed. Matthew will represent the UK at the World Event Young Artists Festival and was one of Modern Painters ‘100 Artists to Watch’.

Cygnett’s Lead Industrial Designer, Shannon Brown, has been working on a brand new case design that we’re all very excited about.

The inspiration was the industrial, angular aesthetic of skyscrapers; the sharp, fractural shapes of stealth jets; and the stippled, sleek lines of morse code.

The design is 3D textured and linear patterned. It will be made from flexible, tough and impact-resistant material, combining both pocket friendly and anti-slip attributes.

Shannon Brown described his design in progress, “This will be more sculptural than other cases. I’m interested in creating a crystalline, facetted effect, which creates a dramatic, positive/negative interplay of light and form.”

So, how did we develop Darkest Spruce?

Cygnett’s lead fashion and trend forecaster, Joanne Roberts, works with product development and design team to bring global trends from the street and the catwalk to our cases.

The Samsung Galaxy SIII was ‘inspired by nature’ and so Jo selected a palette to complement its natural essence. But it was just as important to develop a colour scheme that made the case an on-trend, statement fashion-piece.

Jo talks about the selection of Darkest Spruce for the Galaxy S3 range, ‘From candy apple to deeper tones, green evokes the natural world. This season’s colours range from kelly brights to deep tropical blue-greens. And, that means that blue and green will definitely be seen.’

I see them as a company with a lot to offer in the future when it comes to making fresh, new, exciting cases for the iPhone.
'For this iPad alone I purchased two smart covers, two Michael Kors iPad cases, two Belkin cases, and a Targus case. Needless to say I only have the one smart cover left. After all of those cases I think the Alumni case is one that I could really see myself using on a daily basis.' (Metalicus) 'I actually really dig the metallic inspired style that reminds me of the finish on the Macbook Pro.'

Lavish Earth rated 4.5/5 (Cinema Stripe rated 3.5/5, Slim Kickstand, 3.5/5) “None of the cases are perfect. Each has one or more areas that slightly mar the experience, but overall, the Lavish Earth has won me over. I can deal with the extra bulk, because it offers the best all round performance.
4.5/5 'As an overall package, it’s the best Folio case I’ve ever used. The materials, and practicality of design make it shine in a market full of cases that offer similar features but fail to miss the mark on a few of them. My dislikes aren’t major, and for that reason I knocked off half a mark. Brilliant.'

It’s the Cygnett Icon Art series case, which I stole from my boss John.

Cabin fever might become a factor in the frostiest spot in America, but can you imagine being bored enough to try to eat an iPad outside, when the barometer is at minus-28 degrees?

Well, Petie was.

We recently received an email from Saranac Lake resident, Liz, who owns a naughty little dog and, thankfully, a Cygnett Lavish case. She wrote:

“Last week my dog was apparently bored at home alone and decided to take my iPad outside with him. Did I mention I live in Saranac Lake, NY? You may recognize the name as the weather channel commonly refers to it as ‘the cold spot in the nation’.

“My iPad was outside in the snow and cold for hours. Then my dog decided it looked like a good thing to chew on for a while.

“My husband nearly had a stroke when he saw what the dog had done – he had given me the iPad for Christmas. But when we removed it from the ravaged cover it started up fine.”

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="wysiwyg/Ipad_cover.JPG"}}" alt="" width="450" />

To celebrate the survival of Liz’s iPad, thanks to her Lavish case, and Saranac Lake as the frostiest place in the US, we’ve decided to give away 5 Frost cases for iPhone 4S.

TechKon reviews Arcade

"The Arcade case features a retro 80′s design which helps your phone to stand out from the crowd. It features retro shapes all around the back of the case to give it an old school feel... Yay or Nay? I would say Yay, you should definitely take a look at this not only for its nice design and accessories, but also its protection." 28/03/2012

Case Reviewer reviews Apollo

4/5 "Cygnett, home of the cool and ideal cases for great gadgets, brings us another masterpiece – the Apollo Hybrid iPhone 4S case. Full-plated armor are the words that can best describe this hard shell Apollo case for the iPhone 4S. It offers a good back protective support making your device free from scratches, scrapes and other things that may tarnish the smooth look of your gadget." 18/03/2012

8/10 "When I saw this case at Cygnett’s booth at CES, I had to have it. It’s a really sharp looking case that does a great job of protecting your iPhone 4/4S." 22/03/2012

PC Mag reviews Glam Rock

"Tired of all those tired matte black iPad folios? The glossy silver Cygnett Glam Rock with magnetic closures provides multiple viewing angles and a little more flash than your average iPad case." 18/03/2012

MacWorld reviews FlexiGel

4.5/5 “I was extremely pleased with this case's combination of sleek form factor and excellent protection. While I find the available colors to be nice, I’d love to see additional colors and patterns. Priced lower than many of its competitors, Cygnett’s Flexigel is an all-around great buy.” 14/02/2012

iLounge reviews Apollo

B+ Recommended “Like Case-Mate’s Pop!, Apollo is a very close runner-up to CandyShell, but the differences between them are small and mostly aesthetic. For $30 with a screen protector included, we see Cygnett’s case as a very good solution, and worthy of the same B+ rating that CandyShell and Pop! earned. Those who prefer matte finish cases will likely prefer this over the others for that reason alone.” 10/02/2012

In London, puffer jackets and beanies were required as hundreds lined up in the brisk spring morning at the Covent Garden’s Apple Store to get their hands on the hotly-anticipated new iPad.

From midnight, the crowd swelled, with a line to receive a ticket before joining the queue to purchase. Apparently, a blue shirt honour guard of Apple staff cheered and whooped up the crowd with Apple chants, high-fiving customers as they entered the store.

Our Cygnett man-on-the-ground in London, Rob Parr, took some happy snaps with these gleeful iPad fan boys, already tucking their pride and joy into the super-protective, grey Aerosphere iPad Sleeve.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="wysiwyg/London_Apple_Launch.JPG"}}" alt="" />

The new iPad was equally well-received on the other side of the Atlantic. In New York City, we snapped this very pleased new iPad owner showing off his Lavish Earth Folio Case.

<img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="{{media url="wysiwyg/Happy_NYer_at_new_iPad_launch.JPG"}}" alt="" />

And, at Apple’s flagship store in San Francisco, this west-coaster looked rugged up but chuffed with his new iPad and shiny red Glam case.

Cygnett has been a hive of excitement today, with one of our number hitting the Apple Store line at midnight last night to make sure to we had the third generation new iPad in our hands today.

An evolution, rather than a revolution seems to be the consensus from the technocracy. MacWorld's video review (http://youtu.be/NBBXQoSuxn8) from Jason Snell highlights how very impressive the screen resolution is, that the camera is a decent step up for video shooting and features fast 4G networking.

As Snell says, ‘It cranks everything up a notch.’

Of course, what we’re really excited about is releasing all you need to go along with your new iPad. We were very pleased to see our Cygnett Glam and Lavish new iPad Folio Cases featured in CNET’s review of the best iPad 3 cases (http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-31747_7-10011594-2.html?s=0&o=10011594)

The International Business Post quite rightly called our Lavish Connect ‘something outstanding with on board Bluetooth keyboard for typing on the go.’ (http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/314736/20120315/new-ipad-3-cases-favorite-photos.htm)

There are lots more new iPad accoutrements to drool over. Browse our iPad accessories at http://www.cygnett.com/ipad.html

So, what was your take on the iPad release?

Like the name?

Like the reversal of the ‘Jobs’ Principle’ (newer is no longer lighter and thinner)?

Pining for Siri?
